A Brief History of Geary School District, Its Symbols, and Fight Song

Geary Independent School District I-80 was founded in 1899 with the passage of a bond election to construct and equip a building for $2000. The first school house was a 2-story square frame building with five or six rooms, located on west Main Street. Since that time, several different school buildings have been constructed at various locations. The present Junior-Senior High School is located at 300 S. Blaine, and the Elementary School at 221 S. Galena.
In 1927, the Board of Education selected the Bison as the mascot of the Geary Schools, following an impassioned speech by Albert Reding on the Bison's behalf. School colors were also chosen at that time. Roy "Snake" Allen, the oldest living graduate of Geary High School at that time, voiced his support for the colors "red and black," and his recommendation was accepted.
The Geary Fight Song is sung to the tune of "College Boy." Words to the music were written by a former Geary band director, Earl Tonkinson, in the 1950's.
