Geary Invitational Wrestling Tournament: A Geary Tradition
The Geary Invitational Tournament is the oldest high school wrestling tournament in the nation. Because of this tournament, the town of Geary has become known throughout Oklahoma and the country. In the past 71 years since the tournament began, there are many traditions that have remained constant. The small but distinctive Geary medal has never changed. Many visiting schools are still housed in local homes, churches and even classrooms. The best high school wrestling teams in Oklahoma and surrounding states are invited. Most of Geary's population turns out for the event and helps in many ways to keep the tournament going smoothly. Visiting coaches and parents often compliment the school and community for their courtesy and generosity in making the tournament a memorable one for wrestlers.
